Our students reading nonfiction text to get information for our expository writing.
This week our scientist discovered patterns of movements. We began this lesson by exploring with marbles and paint.

Student led learning: Dade and Harrison

I am completely blown away at how amazing this class is doing. This week we started a NEW way for them to read. Instead of us reading together and me asking comprehension questions (where the same kids would usually answer) students are reading together and coming up with the questions. I am SUPER proud. You could extend this practice into your home by having your child read to you and asking you the questions. Please praise your child even if they are not shown in the video :)

Successful in Second

Each grade level is important in your child's academic career for different reasons. In first grade your child's learning is heavily concentrated on phonics and how to read. In second grade, the concentration shifts from learning how to read to reading to learn. Our goal for reading in 2nd grade is that students will be able to read and pull information from their text. Second grade math will build off of first grade skills and go into more details. For example, in first grade students should have mastered basic addition skills so that in 2nd grade we can move into double digit addition with and without regrouping.

I am posting a link I found to give you an idea on what to expect in 2nd grade. Although not all of this may apply the information can be beneficial resource for you.

Last week we studied inventors and inventions. Our class did a great job reading biographies and identify the important facts about each inventor. Here are some pictures of the students working together to find key information to use for our inventors flip book.

First graders reading biographies of inventors and discussing which important facts we should make note of.

We finished our study on clouds today. We really enjoyed this unit! I love that the students are using the correct vocabulary and can identified certain clouds when we are outside.
